Brayan Hernandez, Catholic '22, is an Education Studies and Politics major from Soyapango, El Salvador. After graduation, he'll be pursuing his Master's of Education at Harvard's Graduate School of Education, completing the Education Leadership, Organizations, and Entrepreneurship program with a concentration in identity, power, and justice in Education.

Briefly describe your new opportunity.

"I will be receiving my Master's of Education at Harvard's Graduate School of Education where I will be completing the Education Leadership, Organizations, and Entrepreneurship program with a concentration in identity, power, and justice in Education."

How did your Catholic University education help you find this path?

"Catholic University connected me to the professors who became mentors and advisors in my academic career. I am grateful for the grand contributions that my friends at the Department of Education have provided for me since they have strengthened my bond with education and helped me explore my passions. I am extremely grateful for the support of Dr. Frederick who was more than advisor for me. She was a mentor, friend, and most importantly, a mother to me.

With the support of Dr. Frederick, and her reminder that 'You have a million dollar future!', I decided to dedicate my life to education leadership and received offers from New York University, The University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, George Washington University, University of Maryland, and Harvard University."

What activities were you involved in during undergrad?

"I created the Migrant Rights Coalitions on campus, which is the only student organization that that focuses on the empowerment of migrants, immigrants, and refugees to promote their dignity in our campus community. This organization was created out of my passion to serve migrants and refugees who are undergoing my experiences as a refugee from El Salvador. I was also involved with the SGA Diversity and Inclusion Initiative."

What were some highlights of your time at Catholic University?

"My best highlight at Catholic was sharing my experience in light of the introduction of the Angels Unawares replica to the University community. I felt a sense of joy in seeing the representation of immigrants and refugees in our community since it reminds us of the dignity and love that we must hold for migrants and refugees."

What advice do you have for students during their post-grad search? 

"If you're having issues figuring out what you want to do, ask yourself what your future self would want out of you. Be mindful and confident of your decisions in your search, and seek paths that you will enjoy and appreciate."
