The Global Medical Brigade is an international organization of medical professionals and students that strive to provide under-sourced communities with medical assistance. They provide supplies and care by setting up sustainable clinics that these areas might otherwise not have access to. Students involved have the opportunity to gain medical care skills while participating in sustainable healthcare practices.
This past January, Joseph Petrosino ‘26 registered Catholic University for its own chapter of the Global Medical Brigade. According to Joseph they have “raised over $5,000 and collected 15 volunteers for our spring break Brigade to Panama.”
3 biology majors lead the E-board of CUA’s chapter and are very passionate about the cause of this club.
Joseph Petrosino is the president of CUA’s chapter. He is a junior biology major who hopes to go into General Dentistry after graduation. He shares his motivation for joining the brigade: “In my life, I’ve been given so many wonderful opportunities and blessings like being able to afford to go to college, having great relationships with my family and friends, and always having access to and being able to pay for state-of-the-art healthcare. So, I feel it is only just for me to thank God for those blessings by helping His sons and daughters who need it most.”
Evan Scott, vice president of the chapter, is also a junior biology major with plans to enter dentistry after graduation. He shares why this cause is important: “Limited or no access to healthcare is a problem present in the world today. It is important because no person should have limited healthcare solely due to where they live. This organization is also important because it provides an educational aspect where locals are taught healthcare principles so the organization’s work can remain even when the workers are not present.”
James Earwood, treasurer of the chapter, is a junior biology major in the 4+1 Biotechnology BS/MS program with plans to become an oral surgeon. He shares why students should join:
“I think the best way to spend your time is by helping others and this club is an amazing way to give your service back to a community that is in need.”
